We built SayTheWord because we believe the most powerful safety tool is not a panic button, a tracking device, or an alarm. It is the ability to understand your own life clearly enough to recognize when something is wrong and take action before it becomes a crisis.

This belief is not idealistic. It is practical. The research is clear: people who maintain self-reflective practices make better decisions about their safety. They recognize warning signs earlier. They trust their instincts more readily. They maintain the clarity that survival requires. Self-knowledge is not a luxury. It is a safety strategy.

We built a journal because journaling is the most accessible form of self-reflection available. It requires no training, no appointment, no other person. It is available whenever you need it, costs nothing beyond the app, and produces benefits that compound over time. Our Commitments

We commit to never reading your journal. Not with algorithms, not with AI, not with human employees, not under any circumstances. Your journal is yours. The architecture of our system makes this commitment structural, not just promised. We cannot read what we cannot access.

We commit to never selling your data. We have no advertising business. We have no data brokerage relationships. We have no analytics that touch the content of your entries. Our business model is simple: we make a tool that is useful enough to pay for. If it stops being useful, you stop paying. This alignment of incentives is by design.

We commit to honest communication about what our tool can and cannot do. SayTheWord is not a replacement for emergency services, therapy, legal advice, or a safety plan developed with a professional advocate. It is a complement to all of these things. We will never overstate our capabilities or understate our limitations.

We commit to building with the input of survivors, advocates, and mental health professionals. The people who understand safety best are the people who live it. Their experience guides our design decisions, and we maintain ongoing relationships with advocacy organizations to ensure our approach remains aligned with best practices.

What We Stand Against

We stand against fear-based marketing in the safety technology space. Exploiting vulnerability to drive downloads is morally indefensible, and we refuse to do it. Our marketing will always lead with capability, never with catastrophe.

We stand against surveillance disguised as safety. Technology that monitors, tracks, or analyzes people without their active, ongoing consent is not safety technology. It is control technology. The distinction matters, and we will always be on the side of user autonomy.

We stand against the treatment of safety as a luxury. The people who need safety tools the most are often the people least able to afford premium subscriptions. While we need revenue to sustain development, we are committed to ensuring that cost is never a barrier to safety. Our approach to accessibility evolves as our resources grow.

We stand against any technology that makes decisions on behalf of the user without their explicit direction. Autonomy is the foundation of safety, and any tool that undermines autonomy, even with good intentions, replicates the dynamics of control that it should be fighting against.

Why We Exist

We exist because a $6 billion journaling market and a $1 billion safety app market have never talked to each other, while millions of people need both. We exist because privacy-first design is possible and necessary. We exist because safety technology should make you feel empowered, not afraid.

We exist for the person journaling at midnight about a relationship they are not sure is safe. For the student walking across campus who wants someone to know if they do not arrive. For the parent processing their worry in a way that does not transfer it to their children. For the survivor maintaining their connection to reality in a situation designed to distort it.

We exist because honest self-reflection should feel safe. Because your most vulnerable thoughts deserve the strongest protection. Because the people who need safety tools should not have to compromise on privacy to get them. Because technology can serve human wellbeing without exploiting human vulnerability.
